For many individuals experiencing homelessness, a companion animal is far more than a pet. They are a source of comfort, companionship, and unconditional love during some of life's most difficult moments.
Unfortunately, the bond between a person and their companion animal can also become a barrier to receiving help. Many individuals hesitate to access meals, showers, counseling, or other essential services because they don't want to leave their animal unattended or unsafe.
Recognizing this need, The Source has expanded its Daily Essentials program by adding secure companion animal kennels at the reSource Center on Commerce Avenue.
Removing One More Barrier
At The Source, we believe no one should have to choose between caring for themselves and caring for the companion who has stood beside them through difficult seasons.
The new kennel area provides members with a safe, secure place for their companion animals while they access services throughout the reSource Center. Whether enjoying a hot restaurant-style meal, taking a shower, doing laundry, meeting with a counselor, or participating in one of The Source's Dignity Programs, members can do so knowing their companion animal is nearby and well cared for.
Each companion animal also receives a special dog bag filled with treats and a toy. It's a small reminder that dignity extends beyond the individual because caring for our neighbors also means caring for the ones they love.
By removing this barrier, more individuals can fully engage in the resources designed to help them move toward stability and independence.
Supporting the Whole Person
The Source has always believed that lasting change happens by addressing the whole person. That means understanding the unique challenges individuals face and continually adapting services to meet those needs.
Adding companion animal kennels is another example of The Source's commitment to creating thoughtful, practical solutions that make services more accessible for members throughout Indian River County. Every improvement, no matter how large or small, is made with one goal in mind: ensuring every individual has the opportunity to move forward with dignity.
Growing to Meet Community Needs
As The Source continues expanding programs and services, innovation remains at the heart of the mission. From housing and employment programs to wellness services, transportation, and now companion animal care, each addition is designed to remove barriers and create new opportunities for success.
Because sometimes helping someone move forward begins with caring for the companion who never left their side.
