Restoring Smiles and Dignity How Dignity Smiles Transforms Lives Through Dental Care

A missing or damaged smile can do more than affect appearance. It can shake a person’s confidence, limit job opportunities, and impact overall health. For individuals rebuilding their lives after homelessness and hardship, dental restoration can become a critical step toward long-term stability.

In Indian River County, Dignity Smiles offers more than free dental care. It restores dignity, confidence, and hope through compassionate community partnership.

How Dignity Smiles Began

Nearly four years ago, a powerful idea took shape through a partnership between Anthony Zorbaugh, Executive Director of The Source, and Dr. Thomas J. Balshi, a retired Board Certified Prosthodontist and Founder of The Pi Dental Implant Center, along with his wife Joanne Balshi of the Pi Foundation.

Together, they created a simple but life-changing vision: help graduates of The Source’s Dining with Dignity culinary training program and other employment-focused initiatives take the next step toward independence by restoring their smiles.

“Those members who are fully trained by our Culinary, Hospitality, and Community Works programs and prove they are prepared to work as respectable and dignified individuals have been eligible to enter the dental restoration program,” said Zorbaugh.

What began as a single dental partnership has now expanded into a growing network of dental professionals throughout Florida committed to helping individuals move forward with dignity and renewed confidence.

More Than Dental Care

For many people experiencing homelessness or hardship, dental care is simply out of reach. Years without treatment can lead to pain, health complications, and a loss of confidence that affects nearly every area of life.

Dignity Smiles addresses far more than oral health.

By restoring smiles, the program helps individuals:

  • Rebuild confidence and self-worth

  • Improve opportunities for employment

  • Relieve long-standing dental pain

  • Strengthen overall health and wellness

  • Feel comfortable engaging with their community again

A restored smile often becomes a turning point, helping individuals feel seen, valued, and capable of moving forward.

A Growing Network of Community Partners

The success of Dignity Smiles is made possible through a growing network of dental professionals and supporters who generously donate their time, expertise, and resources.

Current dental partnerships include:

  • Dr. Sadesh Kumar, DMD – Wickham Dental Care

  • Dr. Ramon Hernandez, DMD – Endodontic Associates of Brevard

  • Dr. Mailis Soler, DMD, MS, FACP – Viera Prosthodontics & Implant Dentistry

  • Drs. Adam Jones, DMD, MS and Giuliana Diaz Jones, DDS – Premier Dental

  • Dr. Denise M. Pieczynski, DMD and Dr. Matthew Rolfes, DMD – Altitude Dental

  • Dr. Eva Napoles, DDS – Nuva Dental

  • Dr. Julie Cromer, DDS – Cromer & Cairns Dental

  • Dr. Renee Gomez, DDS and Dr. Anna Antony, DMD – Harbor Point Dental Care

  • Dr. Eli Friedman, DMD (retired) – One Solutions Dental Specialists of Florida

  • Dr. Krauser, DMD Full Mouth Implants

Since the program began, Dignity Smiles has restored over 20 smiles, each representing a story of hope, healing, and opportunity.

A Collaborative Effort Rooted in Compassion

As a professor and surgical Prosthodontist, Dr. Balshi works closely with participating dentists throughout each stage of the restoration process.

Joanne Balshi leads fundraising efforts for the program, while their son, Stephen Balshi, a BioMedical Engineer and President of CM Prosthetics, generously contributes dental prosthetics for members receiving treatment.

Additional support has also come from Alex DeCastro, South Florida Director of NobelBiocare, and representative Christopher Sohl, who provides top-of-the-line titanium dental implants.

The Source also recognizes Larry Cohen, President Emeritus of Benco Dental Supply Co., whose donation of a state-of-the-art CAT Scanner has significantly strengthened the ongoing capabilities of the Dignity Smiles program.

Dental restoration is about far more than appearance. It can restore confidence during job interviews, strengthen personal relationships, improve physical health, and remind individuals that their future is still full of possibility.

As Anthony Zorbaugh explains:

“A healthy smile does more than brighten a face. It restores confidence, renews dignity, and reminds someone that their future is still full of possibility.”

Dignity Smiles continues to demonstrate what can happen when compassion, partnership, and opportunity come together to create lasting change.
