The Source Responds to Hurricane Milton, Ensuring Member Safety Amidst Shelter Closures
Vero Beach, FL – The Source, a local non-profit organization serving the homeless community, was forced to close its doors ahead of Hurricane Milton due to safety concerns. Neither The Source’s building on Commerce Avenue nor its Dignity Busses, which typically provide overnight shelter, are hurricane-rated safe locations. This meant members had to seek alternative accommodations during the storm.
The Source acted swiftly to keep its members informed, providing updates as Hurricane Milton approached. Once the location of the local hurricane shelter was confirmed, staff announced the availability of transportation for all members in need.
Unlike previous years, where shelters only provided basic access, this year’s hurricane shelter offered additional support with meals and cots. However, upon arrival, members found that cots were unavailable, leaving them to sleep on the concrete floor for two days. The Source stepped in to provide each member with a pillow and blanket to make their stay a little bit more comfortable.
After Hurricane Milton passed, The Source faced another challenge when the shelter announced its closure at noon, leaving those displaced with no immediate place to go. While assessing damage to their own facility, The Source’s staff quickly mobilized, leaving their families to reopen the building and pick up members from the shelter.
Thanks to the dedication of the team, The Source’s kitchen staff quickly prepared a meal, and members were welcomed back to the comfort and security of the Dignity Busses. After two days on the hard floor of the shelter, many expressed deep gratitude for the soft beds on the Dignity Bus, a comfort they will no longer take for granted.
Despite the storm’s challenges, The Source and its members came through Hurricane Milton safely, thanks to the resilience and commitment of the organization’s staff and volunteers.
